Religious Conservatives and the future of the church...

On 9/14/01, Falwell issued an apology for his comments and said he believed that the terrorists alone were responsible for the attacks. He reiterated, however, that theologically he believed that groups that have worked to secularize America have helped remove the nation from its spiritual foundations.

Pat Robertson, on his website, distanced himself from the comments that he had agreed with at the time they were made. He said that during the interview, Falwell suddenly made a "...political statement of blame directed at certain segments of the population that was severe and harsh in tone, and, frankly, not fully understood by the three hosts of The 700 Club who were watching Rev. Falwell on a monitor." Robertson said he considered the comments "totally inappropriate" and that critics had taken the words out of context.

This infamous video created a firestorm in the press when it was made...much like the situation Pat Robertson is in right now. It shows the power of media and the extreme light that is cast on those who use it. My interest in the comments both the 9-11 stuff and the present statements about Haiti and the devil pact are not really about slamming the man or the ministry. They do good stuff, there is no doubt about that. Many people are blessed by the millions of dollars spent in humanitarian relief by the ministries Pat leads and many people have come to faith through thier prayerful work as well.

The issue I have is that this version of American Christianity is becoming more and more a catalyst for a new exodus among faith searching emerging generations. Like the monastic movements of the past...these forces help create a groundswell of reaction that often leads to an abandonment of present religious structures. The church in America had better wake up to the fruit of it's marriage to the state and politics...or she will turn around and realize her kids have left or ran away from home. The religious rights worldview produces a way of thought and action one that is familiar to those raised in conservative, primarily Republican churches. The stuff Robertson televises on his program is soaked in his charismatic, prophesy bent reporting.

Here is an overview of some major controversial moments. Granted, many good folks believe this way...but the serious issue facing the church now...is that the emerging generations most often...don't.

That doesn't bode well for the churches in the future.

Crucifying anyone in a spirit of ridicule isn't the way of Christ...we all learn form putting our foot in our mouths or overspeaking or saying something we shouldn't. There is forgiveness for failures.

But we are still required to examine the doctrine, ethics and way of life these types of folks who call people to vote and live and think a certain way...especially if they stand as a leading voices of evangelicalism or conservatism.

No, no, no...Mr. President...You're THE man! Great speech, I will be praying that you will succeed in living out those ideals and that this nation will rally together and live up to the standard you called us to live. God bless you and your family and the days ahead.

I missed Warren's prayer but I thought the best part of the ceremony was the Rev. Joseph Lowery's benediction prayer. That was a work of art, faith, passion, love and history....Dr. King would have been proud. Rev. Joseph Lowery is considered to be the dean of the civil rights movement. Lowery began his work with civil rights in the early 1950s in Mobile, Alabama, where he headed the Alabama Civic Affairs Association. In 1957, Lowery and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

I was also thrilled to see the poet Elizabeth Alexander, getting to be part of the ceremony, with her poem: "Praise Song For The Day" Elizabeth is only the fourth poet to read at an inauguration, following Robert Frost in 1961, Maya Angelou in 1993 and Miller Williams in 1997. Her poem was average in my humble opinion, but I was still grateful for the act of including poetry into the historic event.

Here I stand...

The reason I voted Third Party was the result of hours and hours of work; a reflection of chasing an inner butterfly, a voice, a dream...conscience. It's the result of a convergence of issues of christian mission, political frustration, eschatology and love . I am coming to new conclusions that influence and direct me towards places and positions that have been deep in me but not fully formulated or formed. The church and this nation are in deep need of fresh chrysalis. These voting Issues have unearthed matters of conscience and conviction that have been under the surface. These subconscious tensions have been rubbing against my heart until I finally started owning them.

This has been no trivial work to me. It's work that originates in my pursuit to live and walk as Jesus walked:

"The one who says that he abides in him must live the same way he himself lived." -1 John 2:6

I feel I have seriously, carefully and honestly laid out that struggle here, not with sound bites and video alone, which unfortunately, I feel is the limit of most peoples interest. Rarely do we take time to examine the girth of the iceberg below the surface of the water...but don't be mislead to the size of the matter by the mere tip that protrudes from the surface.

My posts hopefully hint at the direction one must search for themselves to hammer out the issues if they desire. I know that not everyone cares or is concerned and that many are already convinced of these various matters. But for some, like me, these are broad and serious matters that require more thought, prayer, study and mental work to be done.

I knew that I had serious conscience conflict with war, interventionism, a bully foreign policy stance, preemptive acts of war, constitutional side stepping, Big government fiscal policies, lack of real change in regards to the growing poverty gap, issues surrounding the pro-life positions on killing, the growing powers or worship of the executive office vs the constitutionally designed legislative counterbalance established by the founding Fathers. In this political season I thought Obama spoke to some of the issues better than Mcain did...but Mcain spoke to other issues better than Obama. For me, matters of conscience were divided along party lines...I couldn't put both of my feet on one platform for the first time in my life.

I struggled with what to do until the day I voted and in the end...I felt conscience and sincerity required me to vote according to principle and conscience. For me to do otherwise would be, as the above scripture says...."sin".

I think many of the issues I wrestled with are at the roots of why Mcain lost. It's a shame when the voice of new creation, opportunity, vision, hope, peace, new dreams, restoration, industry, faith, empowerment is nolonger found in the mouth of the church. I think it's a cop out for the church to disdainfully point a pessimistic, judgemental finger at sincere people wanting a better future for themselves and their families. To our shame, most of these pontifications are fired off from our self indulgent, palaces of praise built off the devoured houses of widows (see Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 20:45-47 and 21:1-4 vs. II Corinthians 8:5-15)

I hear the beleaguered droning of the Christians saying: "It's the churches role to serve the poor not the governments role" Really? How well are we practically doing that? How are our churches really working for justice? I think the church in general, stands naked in her uproar and the people are simply looking for real answers and leadership.


If you were in real financial need who is going to help you? The local spiritual moose lodge?

We desperately need to reclaim a right to speak.

The reason most people ignored all the christian warnings is because until we move from condemnation of gays, murderers, and money spenders...we sound hollow. We need more actions to back our moral authority. The religious right looks silly stomping her feet in anger and pouting. Maybe if she spoke less and did more, people would follow her and not opt out by the droves week by week.

I see all of this as a great time of challenge the church will proactively seize or lazily condemn.

Real change...begins with us.

Dear Mr. President-elect Obama:

I want personally to offer you my prayers as you embark on the enormous challenge of leading our country in a time of great crisis and crossroads. While our ultimate hope is our faith in God, we also have high hopes for your administration.

I am one member of a growing movement of Christians and people of faith who support a broad moral agenda that includes a deep concern for poverty, peacemaking, a consistent ethic of life, and care for creation. During the campaign, you said that, if elected, you would face powerful special interests trying to block change. You said you would need a citizen movement to support and push you.

Today, I am pledging to be part of that movement. It will be a movement that will both pray for you and hold you accountable to the things you promised. So I urge you to give high priority to:

Overcome poverty, both here in our rich nation and globally. Your efforts to resolve the economic crisis must include those at the bottom, the poorest among us. You pledged during the campaign to mobilize the nation to cut domestic poverty in half in ten years and to implement the Millennium Development Goals to cut extreme global poverty in half.

Find better ways than war to resolve the inevitable conflicts in the world. It is time to end the war in Iraq and emphasize diplomacy over military action in resolving problems in Iran and Afghanistan. We need better and smarter foreign policy that is more consistent with our best national values.

Promote a consistent ethic of life that addresses all threats to life and dignity. We must end genocide in Darfur, the use of torture, and the death penalty. I urge you to pursue common ground policies which can dramatically reduce abortions in America, and help bring us together on this divisive issue.

Reverse the effects of climate change on God’s creation. We must learn a new way of living in America to end our dangerous dependence on Middle East oil. We need a spiritual commitment to stewardship and national policies that promote safe, clean, and renewable energy. You spoke of job creation and economic renewal with a new “green economy.”

We need your presidential leadership for this type of societal transformation, but I promise also to do my part.

I will pray for you as you assume the awesome responsibility of leading our nation. To be the best president you can be, you will need both the support and the push of the faith community. I pledge to help build the movement that will keep your administration accountable and faithful.

If casting a vote is all we do for change...than we are hypocrites. The real work is lived day in and day out...365 days a year.
I can easily rejoice in the historic nature of electing a hard working, intelligent, family loving, inspiring, country serving, God professing Christian and America's first African-America president. Even though I didn't vote for either of them, I voted for a Third Party candidate, I am part of this country and will pray and work for Change...that I CAN BELIEVE in. On many points we will agree and on many we wont but I will still pray for the President Elect and his family...there will be many challenges ahead.

I also pray those who are angry, disappointed or feel a creeping ambivalence will compost that stuff and turn it into the real change they want to see. Change doesn't have to wait until 2012. Jesus is transforming lives, churches and communities from the inside out...that's something a politician can never do.

But even still I'm no party pooper...I think its a milestone for our Country in amazing ways. I pray that it will lead to a more active populace, an awake and serving church and a return to the humble and more noble America that we have known in the past.

God bless America and the World.

And always remember...Jesus is still King of kings...and Lord of lords.

The reasoning behind my decision...

I will answer this sincere statement and question...after the election: ;)

"I don't want to oversimplify the vote, but can we just simply vote for the persons we think will do a better job of president and vice president? Voting for a candidate that has no chance of winning may be a political statement, but seems a bit of a cop out to me. But better than not voting I suppose."

Vote my conscience...?

W.O.W reveals who will win the VOTE

A christian vote...should be consistently pro-life.

So many commentators and reporters brush off the idea of an eventual, viable, Third Party Candidate by saying it's not realistic or feasible. I thought Ralph Nader's response was so true:

"It's not feasible, when people keep saying its not feasible." -Ralph Nader

I didn't vote for Nader but the brilliance of the above video is that it shows the truth that your choice for either is more and more becoming a choice for both. The bold and visionary stance for an alternative to the present two party only system is in my view far more advantageous for the future generations than more of the same.

I love how Howard Zinn said earlier in the campaign "Vote against McCain, vote for Obama. Even though Obama does not represent any fundamental change, he creates an opening for a possibility of change. Obama will not fulfill that potential for change, unless he is enveloped by a social movement, which is angry enough, powerful enough, insistent enough, that he fills his abstract phrases about change with some content. We need direct action, because only that kind of indignation is going to have some affect on the people in Washington....Yeah. Well, you know, I'm very skeptical about the American political process, which only gives voters a very limited multiple choice test. You know, A or B? Or A and A-prime? The Republicans or the Democrats? And almost always the Republicans and the Democrats are so close to one another in policy, I mean, not identical, but fairly close in policy, so that the person who wants bold changes in the way our society is going is not going to find them represented by either the Democratic or Republican candidates, and that's still true with Obama and McCain...We've gone through an insufferable eight years with the Bush administration, probably the worst administration in history, and, I mean, two wars in one presidency, and a total disregard of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and a shattering of the economy. And in this situation, we are desperate for change. So even though Obama doesn't represent any fundamental change, he creates an opening for the possibility of change. That's why I'm voting for him; that's why I suggest to people that they vote for him. Zinn has recently revealed that he changed his mind and voted for Nader. But his insight is still extremely valid for the long haul.

My frustration with so much of the political discussion among Christians be it the Obama or Mcain supporters is the ambivilance or the rolling over in regards to major issues they hold as matters of conscience.

I couldn't do that...for me, I had to vote consistent with my values, faith and political commitment to Founding Father ideals and present day realities. Some of the loudest religious voices against Obama are for Mcain? Christians who adhere to the One who preached the sermon on the mount; have no problem with killing as long as its not in the womb, economic injustice, corporate coddling, the profound gap between the CEO's and the Workers, Wall Street bailouts, Trillions of dollars being spent on a National war machine that has 700 military bases in over 130 nations of the world...all of this belies the profundity of their supposed political positions.

I couldn't support Obama in the end because of the extent of his pro-abortion voting record which in my opinion undercut his public persona and attempts as presenting himself as one who would aim to "reduce the numbers of abortions"...the fact of his record and words trump these hazy campaigning emanations. This video exposes that, even though again...in my opinion, Mcain isnt the savior of the pro-life voter...He voted for two of the present Supreme Court judges that stand in the way of overturning RoeVWade.

Obama...man...?

Please for the sake of a generation that desperatly needs some schooling in poltical science and history...read the whole article. It will take you less time than watching Heroes...and it will hopefully help derail the madness that is turing the masses into sheep.

A third way...

I know that many reading this blog are focused on Mcain or Obama...but I am sure you are aware that there are other cadidates on your ballots, right? Like Chuck Baldwin & Darrell Castle; the Constitution Party nominees who are the only ones on the ballot endorsed by Ron Paul. Below are some quotes from various Third Party voices and founding fathers. These thoughts hit my "YES!" buttons and enflame my deeply held frustration with the Two Party system; that consistently marginalizes me more and more out of their camps.

They are candidates that are consistently Pro-Life...and will withdraw from Iraq...unlike Mcain and Obama.

If the Republicans were really serious about being pro-life the could have already ended legal abortion in America. Well, this email rises to the top of all the emails I have read from my fellow preachers...who claim "Now I'm not telling you who to vote for...but"
So this is what following Jesus looks like today in America...I really, don't know what to say anymore...I dont care who you choose to vote for but if this is the way we leaders are going to lead our people, or this is the way we are going to frame the discussions of politics, I think we are in for dark days indeed...here is a selection of some of his most potent statements...

"God spoke to me that after George W. Bush, America would elect its most ungodly president ever....

I had a vision earlier this year. I saw Barack Obama in this vision. He was speaking to a large crowd and being broadcast on television. He was speaking incredible words of unity, peace, and bringing all sides together; the words were elegant, the words were comforting, and the words were inspiring.

But while he was speaking I saw all a powerful spirit of violence coming out of his spirit feeding into the spirits of those that were hearing him. If Barack Obama is elected, the attacks against free speech, against those who believe differently than he does, and the systematic use of the government and laws to silence the voice of fundamental Christians will be unlike anything ever seen in this nation before.

I am only speaking the words of thus saith the Lord,

But I want to remind you, every word God has spoken to me over the last eight years and every word which I have prophesied about the American government and the elections has come to pass.

God does not give this prophecy to scare us, but to prepare us.

Now you may be asking, "Are you saying that Barack Obama, if elected, would be America's most ungodly president ever?" Yes!

Now I'm not telling you who to vote for. Some people want an ungodly president. That's their choice. I have watched throughout the world, Christians support political leaders who are blatantly ungodly. So again, this is the people's choice.

The door has been opened and the way is being made for a one world government system to overtake the world's economics.

She is, at the very least, a fellow-traveller of what might be called socialism with an Alaskan face. The state that she governs has no income or sales tax. Instead, it imposes huge levies on the oil companies that lease its oil fields. The proceeds finance the government’s activities and enable it to issue a four-figure annual check to every man, woman, and child in the state. One of the reasons Palin has been a popular governor is that she added an extra twelve hundred dollars to this year’s check, bringing the per-person total to $3,269. A few weeks before she was nominated for Vice-President, she told a visiting journalist—Philip Gourevitch, of this magazine—that “we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” Perhaps there is some meaningful distinction between spreading the wealth and sharing it (“collectively,” no less), but finding it would require the analytic skills of Karl the Marxist."

Blood on whose hands....?

Before you read this post...understand that I am attempting to use the art of rhetorical reasoning...I am not saying that Mcain supporters ARE fighting against God's plan. I am saying that based on the judgment and rhetoric that is leveled against anyone "thinking" about voting for Obama; the same kind of language or thinking, could be turned back on those who have stated these things. My point is it bites when the anti-God language is turned on your own position.

In light of many posts, I appreciate your concern, your reasoning, your prayers and your willingness to present clearly and boldly, your convictions and obviously your deepest felt matters of conscience (which most everyone else reading this is too chicken to do...I guess) :0

But, I must protest.

So far in many of the emails, links and posts that I receive and have read (I take the time to seriously read them), I have been told that if one votes for Obama:

-You are a baby killer
-You are morally responsible for the choices of free men and women
-You are like a person drowning kids in a lake
-You're as bad a Nazi sympathizer
-You're not obeying God
-You're not voting for God's chosen man
-You're guilty of any destruction that comes on America by not voting for a War man.
-You're deceived
-You're not heeding the "revelations" of the modern God(?) appointed seers and prophets
-You're in league with the God hating nations

Ok, now, that's a load of heavy handed Christian intimidation. No freedom to vote here...that's about as on the point of a religious sword as one can be with out it being on his neck!

Vote of else...

I understand that the end of the world is at hand and it rests on my small shoulders. I get, that a bloodbath is coming, millions of innocents blood is on my hands as I scribble a little black dot on a piece of paper. I feel the burning, penetrating stare of every wide eyed, sweaty browed, vein popping prophet with cheap Sunday morning coffee breath...gripping my shoulders and watching as I with trembling hands try to vote. The economy is crashing....the environment is about to burn up or melt off...my grandkids are going to be paupers in a modern Dickens story...my daughters will end up a whores, lesbians and using bathrooms with sexual predators, my sons will become black toothed, cancer ridden Canadian like sickies. I hear that God has got His hammer about to fall and it's first stop is my voting booth, depending on which fallen man I might chose to lead a passing away babylonian kingdom. I know I will bear the outrage, the disdain, the ridicule, the hate of my most loving brothers and sisters in Christ....that people will leave the church I pastor because I am in league with Satan.

So...no pressure.

But since I have attempted to honestly share my unfolding political path, fully knowing that I will be skewered, tarred and feathered for doing so...still isn't it fair to say that God hasn't always put the "good guys" in power?

What if this is God's outworking of His own plan of Judgement and if you don't vote for Obama, you are the one fighting against the plan of God? What if your prophets are the ones who are prophesying falsely? What if all the prophets of the 90's who have been saying for years, if you read their now 50% off book bin books...that God is going to judge America not make it better for her?

Maybe Mcain supporters are resisting the plans of God?

Now as some who hasn't voted...yet. How am I supposed to weigh all these modern prophets words..when each new book, or every four years the messages seem to be different? One moment God is happy, the next He is mad...God appears to be suffering from doublemindedness.

And as far as blood on someones hands due to the choices of someone else or your vote...do Bush voter's hands have the blood of over 1, 273,378 Iraq dead on them? Will God hold them accountable for thier deaths because they voted for Bush...twice!

Where does the search for blood end?

Am I guilty before God because I pay taxes and other men and women choose to use those taxes for purposes that are ungodly, unjust and possibly immoral? Should we stop paying taxes because of the moral liability before God?


And as for the issue of the poor...though that is not the only reason I have battled with my choice, but since it has been pointed out:

Here is God's word to those Sodomites that will surley be taking over, because of me...notice, nothing is mentioned clearly about their vile deeds of sex....but, something else is mentioned:

Ezekiel 16:49-50:
‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

And Isaiah 1:10-17 speak to Sodom and Gomorrah says:
Your hands are full of blood, wash and make yourselves clean.
Take your evil deeds out of my sight!
Stop doing wrong, learn to do right, Seek justice, encourage the oppressed.
Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.

So I guess me and God care about some stuff that matters.

In the end, I want what you want...but...I think that RoeVWade wont be overturned by either men.
I know that John Mcain voted for two of the liberal Justices already...so I guess he "might" do that again?
I know that people are free to choose God's ways or not and I will stand before Him for my choices not others.
I know that if RvW was overturned...it would just go back to the states and abortions would continue.
I know that pro-life Americans are not adopting all the children that are here RIGHT NOW and need homes...so what is going to happen to all the children's if Abortion was illegal...you think us sodomite like self absorbed Americans are going to adopt them...I doubt it.

If you are not working for life now...your votes are possibly slightly hypocritical?

If you don't have a child that isn't your own...your stance might possibly be hypocritical.

if you support killing in any fashion...your vote might possibly be hypocritical.

If you dont care about people dying somewhere else on the planet because you cant "see" them...your vote might possibly be hypocritical.

Arn't those fair observations?

Now hopefully I have shared this calmly, with no venom, but from a sincere place of seeking truth among all the God bullying going on.

I'm a Dead man voting...

Babylon...has become a dwelling place place of demons and a prison of every unclean spirit, and a prison of every unclean and hateful bird, for all the nations have drunk of the wine of the passion of her immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed acts of immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich by the wealth of her sensuality...I heard another voice from heaven, saying "Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues.- Revelations 18:2-4

Whatever political party you choose, as a Christian, you have to hold the above verse in tension with your political hopes, dreams, aspirations and expectations. Keeping prophetic clarity on the truth behind the realities we engage in, is a gift given to us through the prophetic scriptures. God so graciously and frighteningly pulls back the veils of this world and lets us see into the cosmos and the unfolding judgment that is piling up (Rev 18:5).

We are all required to be born again and wake up out of our own private Matrix.

Nations, Kings and Merchants...the commodities of this present world system are all drunk to some degree on the wine of worldly ambitions, sensuality, pride and demonic preoccupations. As negative and hopeless as that might appear, the truth is liberating, if seen from a Dawning Kingdom perspective. My hope isn't in a human king, kingdom or Economy...its in the ruling Kingship of King Jesus. I am presently living within, and expecting the continual coming of that king and His kingdom on Earth as it is in Heaven. I am living and looking for the Kingdom that is coming down to earth...I'm not looking to go somewhere else...I'm waiting for Him to return.

So as I live out my Kingdom citizenship among the kings and Nations of this world which are "passing away" (1 Cor. 2:6)...I vote with clarity that there are forces at work in "Babylon" that are unclean, drunk, inhabited, hateful, materialistic. It procreates a imprisoned life that is hopelessly cyclical in it's inability to really offer much more than a dim reflection of light, compared to the Sun that is dawning (Luke 1:78).

All the modern attempts to apply Biblical leadership scriptures to the political process, is in my view, a misapplication of Kingdom of God realities to Babylon. It's dressing up a whore in the Brides gown...and that is blasphemous at worst, and biblically ignorant at best.

Babylon is full of blood (Rev 17:6) and the evidence is all around us:

In the innocent casualties of international conflicts...


In sickness, disease and starvation...


In the threat of complete and utter annihilation...


In the perpetuation of bigotry, radical extremism and religious hate...

In the end, whatever King, we vote in, whatever policies they may vote in, repeal or embolden...it's a outworking of a far greater wickedness than just one of those unclean birds, that gnaw on all that is good, righteous and holy. There is a "Mother" of these evil and unclean carrion...she has many offspring...including:
I pray for the day when God will finally judge the Mother of harlots (Rev. 19:2)..until then I am a stranger in a foreign land....I do not expect much from fallen kings and kingdoms.

I prayerfully wrestle with voting for a candidate...I do so with no stars in my eyes, or fear in my heart...I don't vote for a savior or a warrior. I'm not looking to the arm of man or the buck of the banker but to the Sovereign Hand of God to outwork His plans in and through the Kingdoms and Kings of this world. Sometimes He chooses Righteous Davids...and sometimes unrighteous Nebachudnezzars.

In the end...the spiritual truth is...

"the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world!
(Galatians 6:14)
