No damsels in distress here....
Wired magazine wrote this article about the butt kicking, strong female characters in Battlestar Galactica. It's one of the reasons I dig Science Fiction, you can break the molds, the stereotypes, explore alternative paths of human existence and extrapolate on current cultural taboos or stress points. Religion, power, war, race, gender, sex, greed, ecology, ethics, morality all get a through exam in this series...which makes for some controversial and explosive story lines. I hope this season delivers. I'm sure hardline complementarians would have a hard time with these ladies but I sure think its more dignifying than a lot of the belittling eye-candy roles most women get in tv/films...I find this refreshing. Warning: show is for mature audiences only.

Zero...for the Heroes season opener.
Well...I guess with the new Villains theme, I should of expected a more darker Heroes, but I was shocked by last nights season opener. More heads getting cut open, brains poked at, heads lopped off, Women in their underwear, men getting it on with the ladies, full on sexual romping going on, strange God, prayer and messiahish stuff. The picture above is obviously a sun being eclipsed..not a sun emerging this season. It was a barrage of disturbing visual assaults that left me pining for the good old days of Gilligan's Island...sure there was Ginger in her sexy dresses but she was never manhandled in the coconut hut by a sweaty, horny manamial of a professor. I can't imagine what will be allowed on tv when my kids have kids...it's getting raunchier, darker, creepier and flat out more and more ungodly. I think I'm pulling the plug on this one.
Plus...I thought it was boring, tired and unoriginal from a writing standpoint.

FlapJack...this show is bizarre.
Anyone notice that they are making cartoons more and more appealing to weird adults like myself? What's up with that?

BSG Season 4...
I finally was able to watch my recorded season opener of BSG....my twig fix was oh so delightfully satiated. The whole Baltar messiah thingy is weird, I wonder where they are going with this plot line. He prayed to the 'One true God" for a boy in the episode and he was healed. Of course the mixing of sexuality and spirituality is problematic...spirituality is now hot and sexy I guess. One of my problems with the show is the blatant sexism of only having pretty chicks being all over the Galatica not to mention the Cylon vixens. The obnoxious playing to the demographic is so juvenile. But other than that the show is a mature look at contemporary issues with great acting and amazing special effects. It's not a show for the kiddies or anyone who is not comfortable with PG-13 or almost R type movies the subject matter is adult in both intensity and life situations.

Redemption...

Yes, a massive sigh of relief is heard over Spokane. This Scfi-Twig's anxious fears of another cheesy rip off tv show were eased because part 2 of "The Sarah Conner Chronicles" premiere redeemed itself. A completely different experience last night than Sunday night. It's like they had a DO-OVER...and boy did it hit the mark. The new Terminators were better, the plot got interesting, the fight scenes were creative, the humor "Please remain calm" was actually funny. HELLO!!!! Did the writers return from their strike or something? Did the part one writers get canned because everyone rose up in a giant cyborg loving rebellion and crush them and their pathetic scripting? I couldn't even believe it was the same show...and yes, that is a little tear of gratitude slipping down the cheek of this scfi loving geek. Selah...

Crappy Chronicles...

Booooo...part one of the premiere stunk. I will hold out for part two tonight but I am not hopeful.
First of all they didn't give us anything new...same story line but on tv. Come on, isnt there anyone out there that could write something orgional for the first look at the show? The male Terminator was a joke...his trying to look scary and tough face...was comical. His herky-jerky movements were like bad break dancers trying to pop and lock in my JR days. Sarah's not bad, John will work, and the new Terminette...not sure yet...she sure was getting thrown around like a little toy poodle. You would think they would of sent some chick like one of the American Gladiators. I hope this show doesn't end up like The Bionic Woman, which was my last mercy-viewing...I tanked that after about 3 episodes. Besides "Battlestar" is there any good tv Scfi out there???

Razor: Battlestar Galatica
I rented and watched the 2 hour pre-season Battlestar Galatica dvd last night. Yet again...this show tops all my other tv interests. It simply is the best sfi-show in a long time in my opinion. Watch this dvd and tell me you dont want to see more. And if you're grumpy about the new look of the Cylons etc...rent the dvd for a full retro expereince...yes, the "AT YOUR COMMAND" toasters are back and kicking some butt. Warning: this show isnt kid friendly, its rough, raw and pushes the envelope sometimes, so if you are looking for "Little House in the Galaxy" steer away from this show.

Heroes...angst.
Ok...i've been watching "Heroes" for the last two seasons. But this last few episodes has got me a bit perturbed. If you remove the sense of tragedy from a series by allowing for anyone who dies to be brought to life either through "magic blood" or time travel...where is the drama in that. Now, whenever someone gets knocked off...eh, so what, we all now know that Heroes don't die...they just act like it for ratings. That is a major weak point for me. I want to feel tragedy and drama when a Hero dies...it jips the moment when you sprinkle hero dust on them and they resume the endless story. I hope Jessica does stay dead....she adds looks to the show but her character line puts me to sleep. I hope that the next "chapter: VILLAINS" really has some villains that are creative...not superpowers that can do anything..but creative storytelling that puts tension in the plot not a massive wave of overpowering evil that nobody can withstand. Give me a tad of reality in this unreal world.
